Description

Catalog for an exhibition Self-Proliferation at Girls’ Club, from Nov 12, 2015 – July 30, 2016. The Catalog includes a forward by Michelle Weinberg and an essay by Micaela Giovannotti. Self-Proliferation, an exhibition of works by more than thirty artists from the collection of Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz. Selected by independent curator Micaela Giovannotti, Self-Proliferation expresses the natural female propensity for replication and fecundity. The majority of works are created as multiples – books, prints, photographs, videos – that manifest the fungible nature of contemporary art production and collection today. Many works exhibit an easy familiarity with technology. Others expose the nuances of the female “self” as a construction inspired by popular culture and the inherently female conditions of duality, doubling, mirroring and projection. Participating artists include: TJ Ahearn, Ida Applebroog, John Baldessari, Hernan Bas, Delia Brown, Rosemarie Chiarlone, John Evans, Dara Friedman, Chitra Ganesh, Ann Hamilton, Quisqueya Henriquez, Nikki S. Lee, Holly Lynton, Vivian Maier, Jillian Mayer, Annette Messager, Wangechi Mutu, Alice Neel, Elizabeth Peyton, Peggy Preheim, Martha Rosler, Rosanna Saccoccio, Kanako Sasaki, Cindy Sherman, Laurie Simmons, Xaviera Simmons, Lorna Simpson, Nancy Spero, Jessica Stockholder, Mariana Telleria, Mickalene Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems, Paula Wilson, and Rachel Perry Welty.
